I am considering replacing my fiberglass roof with a Gerard metal roof. Is this a good idea to go with a stone coated metal roof…..I have several sky lights and am considering replacing them at the time the roof work. I am using a company called Honest Abe Roofing
Victor,
My personal opinion and from experience – stone coated steel is one of the worst metal roofs out there. It’s not becuase it’s a bad product, but a bad design, which cannot me changed.
It is extremely difficult to properly flash any type of roof penetration (such as skylights), and make sure they won’t leak in 1, 2 3 years.
This product is very expensive, and hard to work with.
It is very hard to find quality installers with experinece in doing this type of work.
With that said – it looks like you want the barrel tile look – am I correct?
If so – there is also a tile-like product by Matterhorn Metal Roofing (now owned by CertainTeed) … it is also expensive and has same flashing issues that come with Gerard / Allmet and other stone coated tile roofs, but is easier to work with, and looks much nicer in my opinion.
Bottom line – it will be expensive, and hard top find good installers. I’d suggest standing seam metal or even metal shingles instead.
Good luck.
