Im trying to decide between metal and asphalt roofing to recover our roof, I will be doing the work myself. I have a good grasp on the shingles (i think) and have been pricing metal roofing options. I have been asking for instalation help and all the distrubutors dont seem to have much experience despite the fact they sell it…. I undertand the screwing down of the metal roofing but cant find any consistant info on underlayment!? What is the best practice for underlayment and are there any resources to help with instalation?

I presume you will tdo this metal roof yourself.
So, I don’t know which profile you want to do (R-Panel / Standing Seam / Metal Shingles), but as for underlayment – use GAF DeckArmor. Install it from bottom up, with 6" overlaps. You don’t really need ice and water barrier with metal + deck armor.
