I’m looking for 24 ga galvalume steel shingle with a Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 finish that’s Energy Star Rated and has a good reflective coating. Is it possible? I’ve looked with no luck. Would greatly appreciate your advice. I live in Daphne, AL aprox 3 miles from coast.

Thank you!

Hi Laura

What you are looking for does not exist.

1) as far as I know – all steel shingles are G-90 galvanized steel – not Galvalume.

Galvalume is used in standing seam because that type of "coating" is less susceptible to micro fractures when panels go through roll forming machine. G90 (G100) is better for stamping press type manufacturing which is how metal shingles are made

2) All steel shingles are around 28 GA (not 24) because it’s easier to work with and to stamp. 24Ga is too think for stamping and unnecessary for panel strength.

Now Kynar/Hylar comes on most if not all steel shingles, so that’s not an issue.

With that said – I thing G90 / Galvalume are pretty much equal in corrosion resistance, but each one is better for it’s respective product line.

I think 24GA is the main factor (for you here) … are you concerned with panel strength? If so, you don’t need to be. 28 ga may seem too thin, but trust me – it’s not.

I’ve installed over 50 metal shingle roofs – most steel, including one on my own house – they are for the most part excellent in corrosion resistance, panel strength and paint fading.

I hope this helps. Good luck
