Hi Leo, It looks like this article is quite recent, but I’m wondering whether your comments on the Matterhorn by CertainTeed are still valid. I like the way its panels install vertically; seems like that would result in less walking on the roof. Otherwise Tamko is your main recommendation, but its colors are too solid for my taste. So I’m considering Edco instead. This will be for a new house in Prescott Valley, AZ, 5000 ft elevation, mild climate, about 40 squares, all hip & valley, no gable ends, minimal penetrations, 5 in 12 pitch. I plan to install it myself. Oh, and the HOA requires subdued colors, like earth tones; but I would still like to get a color that reflects solar heat, if possible. Whatever I go with will have to be available here, or in the Phoenix market.
Hi Peter,
Great questions, and kudos for doing it yourself… it will be very rewarding. So I will start from the end.
All three products should be available from local roofing suppliers, as they are sold through distribution (not direct to roofers). I definitely recommend price shopping and negotiating … especially if you go with Matterhorn … most suppliers sell very little of this product (at least in MA), and 99% of salespeople have no idea this product even exists, and how much it costs. I’m still waiting on all my quotes 🙁 Finally if you can’t buy locally, there are many online sellers that will ship to you.
Now colors and solar reflectivity – as far as I’m aware, EDCO is 100% cool roof … meaning all its colors are "cool roof" certified, and will reflect most of solar heat. Tamko is definitely "cool", and Matterhorn should be as well.
While Tamko colors are "too solid" I really like the patina slate color, and think it would look amazing on a mountain-top house … but question is what type of siding you have (material and color) …. If beige / wood type / color then yes, patina looks great with wood.
As far as EDCO colors – they are multi-tone (as you are aware), which makes them a lot more expensive compared to Tamko .. And matterhorn is just very expensive overall.
Last thing about Matterhorn – they have very poorly designed flashing kits, so it’s not really good for valleys / skylights / dormers.
The choice is yours … but I would go with either Tamko or EDCO for reasons of cost and system design.
Good luck, and send me some pics 🙂 … you can use https://imgur.com to upload, and post links here in reply… Cheers!
