Why is it so much more expensive to install a metal roof instead of a asphalt roof? How much would it be to install a metal roof at 2800 sq ft.

Metal roofing installtion is slower, more comlicated, and very detail oriented. It takes specially traned roofers, with ability to learn and apply brain power to what they are doing, IF you don’t want leaks. There aren’t many good metal roofing installers… i’d say there is a big shortage of them, which increases labor costs.
Materials are also considerably more expensive, depending on metal, style, paint that you want.
As far as costs – we have a metal roof cost estimater here: https://www.roofcalc.org/metal-roofing-calculator/ … I’d say you are looking at at least $13500 for cheapest R-panel to about $18K minimum for standing seam. These are low end prices … average is $16K / $22K
In MA, it would cost about $28K for a good metal roof that size…
